I have heard that the supercharger engagement was quite dramatic -- it was electrically switched just like the kickdown switch. 98 to 137 hp at the click of a switch had to be fun.
My mechanic friend's stepfather aquired Rommel's staff car in the late 40's as a junker, but it ran long enough for the two of them to take it for a short run on the autobahn, sitting on milk crates. He said he fell over backwards when the supercharger cut in, but the engine tossed a main bearing so they never drove it again. Big beast of a car, though.
