A mining engineer on another list said there is ten times the amount of oil in the Middle East contained in the oil shales in Canada and certain U.S. Western states. Now that the price of crude has exceeded a critical price, international oil companies are mining it on a large scale in Canada. I read an article about life in the Canadian mining areas; probably in the Wall Street Journal, the Economist, or the Smithsonian magazine. When the oil shale refineries start producing in large quantities, the price of crude will drop, but never to previous low levels since the cost of extracting oil from shale is considerably more than pumping it, according to the mining engineer.
