One Possibility: My charges [self and spouse] for medical stuff this year is already between $3-4k. No hospitalizations or unusual expenses. That comes with age also, also, as does a reasonable use of finances. If I didn't have good insurance I would have big problems. 40+M Americans do not. It is also possible that neither spouse ever had a decent job and they just barely managed to get a home - possibly with a need to refinance to help out a kid in trouble or cover lost wages due to accident or illness... Lots of reasons people might be needing cash in their older years. BillR
