Diesel was cheaper than regular until about 1996 in most places,
naturally, that's when I got my first diesel Benz.

Today I paid $4.00 per gallon, should have filled up yesterday when I
planned to. I'm getting almost 32 mpg consistantly, but still..

The main reason that diesel is more expensive than gas these days is
that all over-the-road trucks are diesel these days. In the 70's a
goodly number were gassers, and a much higher proportion of freight
went by rail, not long haul truck.

Says something about the relative fuel consumption of trucks vs
trains, which is why CSX is double lining our local tracks -- they
pulled one up in the 40's.
