Is that because the linkage was worn and it required some special finesse or 
are you just saying that people no
longer understand column shifters? I learned to drive on column shifts so it 
makes no sense to me that people
cannot figure out how to do it. I do recall linkage that would jamb and require 
me to open the hood and pop it back
into neutral so that I could carry on.

MY 1962 220Sb had a column shift.  I liked it ok, but after several year I
was the only person who could shift it.  Easy for me but others just
couldn't.
