The setup we use for ChallengeX is fairly simple... it's the controls 
that are complicated!  The Equinox was an all-wheel drive car, and it 
was converted for the ICE to be FWD, and the electric motor would be 
RWD.  I think commercial vehicles have some kind of crazy torque 
converter that combines the two.  The simple version of the controls is 
that the engine does the brute force of the work (all the work on the 
highway and when maintaining speed) while the electric motor is there to 
  make the car perform like a normal car since the engine is much 
smaller than a normal car.  Of course, when braking it also acts as a 
generator.
