Larry,

Jack up the front end of the car and check the bearings on the wheels.
Grab the wheel at 3 and 9 o'clock move the wheels back and forth, push
on front and pull on back and then vice versa and see if they feel loose.
A power steering pump usually sounds like a higher pitched whining then
a low rumble roar. The noise would be there all the time and get worse
if the wheel is turned either left or right. Loose bearings would tend
to go away if the wheel it turned one way or the other.

My 78 240D has developed a roar once road speed is above 15mph or so -
  but
when the steering wheel is turned to the left the roar goes away --
  does
that seem like the roar is coming from the PS pump? I've been trying
  to
diagnose this noise for some time - a year or so. The PS acts normally
  - no
additional effort is needed to steer (that I can detect) - there's no
  other
noises coming from the pump like groaning when turning and no other
  symptoms
are present.

I did notice one other thing - when I checked the fluid level
  immediately
after driving, the fluid looked undisturbed - typically I believe the
  fluid
will look like it's been moving - frothy with bubbles on the surface of
  the
fluid I believe - but in this case, the fluid looke like a quiet pool.

I have a used PS Pump on the way so I;ll switch them out regardless --
  just
curious if this sounds like a PS pump problem -

TIA -
