I suspected and just confirmed, at least in 2008 you can't have 4x4 and 4cyl
with a Ford. One of the things I really like about the Chevy is the
buildablity. You can put just about any engine with just about any trans and
body style.

Unfortunately the reviews stink...

I'd have to go with the Ranger, too, with a 4 cyl and 5 speed.

They get the best mileage. THey're just about right for hauling small
loads.  And if you have to haul something larger, just add a $600,
3/4-ton capacity Home Depot utility trailer, and you can haul nearly
two tons of stuff, and more volume than in a full-sized pickup.

I am a 1/4 owner of an '86 S-10, which is stone age unrefined, but
the little 92-hp 4 pulls it just fine and gets 25 mpg. I've hauled
3,500 pounds from Maine to Iowa with it (1500 in the bed and about
2000 in the trailer) at 65 mph, in 5th, and got 18 mpg doing it.

Best of both worlds--best milage for most work, and more capacity
than a big pickup when you need it, with a trailer.
