There is no straight forward answer for this...you have to explain the interviewer giving some real time scenarios and tell how and when the automation comes into play....It depends on client to client and on project basis.
Automation can start from the first version of the build to QA and would run for every build. But for some projects it can start after the Manual testing is complete or when the build is stable enough or on the final build. Always try to answer giving examples of why and when to automate wrt to project context. Hope this helps.
