if you are paying $50,000 to $100,000 a seat for a program, you BUY the
computer it needs.

Other vendors of similar FPGA software include Vantis (formerly AMD's PAL
group, now owned by Lattice) with their CUPL and related tools, Synplicity
who has a new logic sythesis package which is good at automatically
partitioning a large complex project into multiple CPLD or FPGAs.
http://www.vantis.com and http://www.synplicity.com naturally :)

Primary vendors of high density CPLD/FPGA chips are Altera, Xylinx, Actel,
and Lattice. These chip companies each tend to also have their own design
software, often somewhat cheaper than the 3rd party stuff.

A typical smaller FPGA with 90K gates equivalent might sell in very high
volumes for $10 each.
