gp (also know as pari) is a good tool for this...

$ gp
                    GP/PARI CALCULATOR Version 2.0.17 (beta)
[snip]
(08:21) gp > ((2^6972593)-1)%10000000000
%1 = 2924193791

This took no time at all to calculate.  Whereas calculating the
complete decimal expansion took ages...
