I'm not sure many outside this list would agree with your last point.  :-)
In my experience prime95/mprime gets >95% of the processor even when I'm
making heavy use of the machine.  That goes up to >99.9% when I'm not using
it.  Also I would guess that a state of the art PC runs at 20 or more times
the speed of a P90, while an entry level machine would be about half
that.  So I'm lead to some combination of the following conclusions:-

1.  Most GIMPS machines are obsolete, i.e less than entry level.
2.  Most GIMPS machines are on for only a few minutes each day on average.
3.  One or both of the two figures published is be incorrect.
4.  The figure for the number of machines includes many that are not really
active.
