Do you actually need the --build and --host things? I thought that was if you were going to use a cross-compiler. I only have x86_64-pc-linux-gnu-gcc, no i686-...-gnu-gcc. In the past I've just done CFLAGS=-m32 CXXFLAGS=-m32 and it has worked like a charm.
