Thanks again to all the folks who have added to the MC FAQ and list 
discussion regarding the use of the Windows Registry to launch a web 
browser.  I hadn't seen any mention of launching a default email 
application using this technique, but it looks like you can check the 
"mailto" key in just the same way as you'd check "http."  Here's the 
path:

hkey_local_machine\software\classes\mailto\shell\open\command\

This is probably obvious to everyone, but I thought it might be helpful.
