If you search the archive you'll find at least one instance where "one of the guys" from Metacard explains what's wrong with using idle in MC and then decide whom to believe.With all respect to Dominique and Phil, I would like to disagree here. I use to avoid idle handlers like crazy in HyperCard until one day one of the guys from Heizer Software said simply "There's nothing wrong with idle handlers". I've used them ever since with no problem. You just have to remember they're there when you look for bugs.
