It's actually the fastest. Unfortunately, it's also the least-supported. I 
honestly have little idea how it works. Also, metakit's lack of explicit null 
has caused some difficultly, but I've managed some work-arounds for that - 
which in some cases means just skipping some unit tests :(

It's not going to be dropped overnight, since I still have some considerable 
work to do on the other new backends before the next release.
