Thanks for all those replies, people.

Perhaps we could simply have a very simple tracker whose sole purpose
> is to distribute bootstrapping information for the DHT.

Yup. In any case, atleast one node *is* required.

I'll pointify the rest.

1. How exactly do you think file transfers should initiate, if you want to
use metalinks. I had one model in mind. Like in Gnutella, whenever a node
sends a query, it passes it on to its next node, and that node to its next
node, upto a certain depth. And the last node to be queried then returns the
result to its previous node, thus backtracking upto the first node, which
can then display the results. Now if we are tracing back the path followed
anyways, could it be possible for the last node to create a .metalink file
and add all its query results to it. And as the back tracking takes place,
each node appends its own query results to the metalink file, which can then
be passed on to the original node.

2. Are we supposed to consider only those nodes which have the complete file
(to be downloaded), or those also, which have the partial file. Like, at a
particular node, the node is supposed to append all its query results to the
metalink file it has, which would make sense only if the list of nodes it
has in its query result have the complete file. Plus, if we start including
the positions of chunks in the metalink file, the size of the metalink file
itself may increase exponentially. :-)
Any inputs on this?

3. Also, what protocol do you people suggest for node-to-node file
transfers? HTTP/FTP aren't eligible, since they are too rigid, as mentioned
in the last mail. And would designing a custom protocol require some sort of
a plugin into the current metalink download clients?

Hope all that made sense. Looking forward to more inputs.
