I had the same issue and this is what I use with JRE 1.8.0 (latest didn't work)

java -Xms1G -Xmx1G -jar ~/opt/metamath/mmj2/mmj2jar/mmj2.jar
"RunParms.txt" Y "/Users/spolu/opt/metamath/mmj2/mmj2jar/"
"/Users/spolu/opt/metamath/set.mm" ""
