Hi Rafael and list,

What I have used and use regarding a magnet, is a "rare earth" magnet shaped
like a small doughnut, (thanks Rob!) simply tied to a string. Rare earth
magnets have a very strong pull, and can be found for a fairly reasonable
price either on EBAY, or science supply houses such as Edmunds Scientific Co.
On the other end is a simple fastener also tied to the string, which is then
attached to a belt loop on your pants. This method keeps your hands free.

If your magnet does not have a hole, you could use a hot glue gun to fasten a
string to the magnet. The string then could be attached to a wood dowel, or
part of a cane fishing pole. If you stick the magnet directly to the stick
itself, it will harder to determine if a particular sample is magnetic or not
as the stick almost acts as a lever. A string allows for more sensitivity
(the magnet swinging freely) to objects that are less magnetic.

Hope this helps,
Best,
