A rare type iron meteorite Sunday Observer (Sri Lanka) December 4, 2004
The Arthur C. Clarke Institute for Modern Technologies last week confirmed that the object fallen at Pulasthipura was a rare type of iron meteorite.
After conducting X-Ray Fluorescence Spectrometry analysis and several other tests, the institute has come to the conclusion that this rare type of meteorite consists of elements Ti, Cr, Mn, Fe, Zn, according to the institute.
The object weighing 47.015 kg with a 4.75 specific gravity was fallen at Sankabodhi Viharaya, Pulasthipura, Polonnaruwa on November 27 around 1.20 p.m. Yatigala Upathissa Thera has seen a blue colour smoke tail when the object came down. According to Principal, Research Scientist on Space Applications of the institute, Dr. Chandana Jayaratne, though the meteorite was shining with metallic bluish colour at the time it had fallen, within a day it had encountered with the earth's atmosphere with oxygen and its colour had become brownish black.
