Sounds like a description of a fireball. You asked about meteorites, and apparently none are associated with this meteor. Fireballs don't usually produce a "shower of stones", but such showers are frequently reported when fireballs happen over primitive areas (which most every place was in 1820).

Hi,

Greg has:

Nov 29 1820, Cosenza; Ionian Isles ... ... ... lighted everything up;
like daylight. Calabria. Arago says a shower of stones; other
accounts, only a great meteor. No mention of any detonations.

So I know such a case exists.

Best,

Chris

Hi list,

Does anyone happen to know about a meteorite that fell on November
29th 1820 in Italy? I found an article describing the fall in The
Times of London from 1821, and there are a few scattered notes here
and there (Greg, etc) but nothing specific.
