I noticed the same thing Graham. This is one of the most remarkable series of photographs that I have ever seen taken from space! The QuickTime animation from the NASA Earth Observatory is a must see!

Amazing shots...you can actually see the progress of the debris and pyroplastic flows travelling down the lower valleys over just a few seconds in the sequence.
