I have been contacted by Michael Davias, who is putting for the novel
hypothesis that some fragments of Comet Encke entered into Earth orbit from
Encke's short period orbit, and then impacted the Earth at low speeds later on.
He and his associates have set out some of their work here:

Including geological data.
As I can no longer work out the mechanics of this, nor evaluate his geological
claims, I suggested to him that I forward his message to specialists who could.
