All,

I'm evaluating Gibbs myself, and I think jonbanquer has his head so far up
his *** he can't see the forest for the trees. (What, too many metaphors?)
Bill Gibbs must have turned him down for a job. I was forced to filter
banquer out from alt.machines.cnc because of his incessant ranting and
raving. He claims he doesn't like Gibbs because they don't have a demo
version, they don't have an educational discount, they don't have macros,
and they don't have user customizable posts.

I've been with SmartCAM since v2.05, and use it daily. Yes, I like drawing
in SmartCAM better, but each time I use Gibbs, I like it more. It has a lot
of power, and a lot of intuitive features. And yes, you CAN pick the X,Y,
and Z from existing geometry.

True, there is no macro language, and as of now, posts are not user
customizable. As of now.

Feel free to email me directly if you have any questions. I'm not an expert
yet, but I'll sure try.

Dave

Gibbs seemed like a fairly good product at the time that I tested it, but
the post processing was a problem. They seemed to want to keep everything a
secret as far as their post language (compost) was concerned. They wanted to
develop and maintain all the post processors. This was unacceptable to me.
This may have changed but it is definitely worth checking out.

I looked at it, it seems a fair package, but then again, I also read the
alt.machines.cnc newsgroup and some guy named jonbanquer in there seems to
think that gibbs is the cause of all bad things ever to have occured on the
planet. Get opinions from users, and get a hands on demo from a dealer
programming one of your parts. Don't purchase based on their part programs,
but yours. And run the part, analyze the code, see what you think of its
roughing and surfacing or whatever you are needing. If it works for you,
makes you money, then to heck with what other people think.
IMHO
Jon
