I have been unable to use communicate since moving from a 386 to a 486 machine, all settings being equal. I could sometimes get it to work by hitting the pause key after starting the send operation.

Sounds like a buffer over run at the machine. I had the exact same problem with a wasino a couple of years ago. Try reducing the baud rate (make sure both the computer and machine are set up exactly the same).
