Bob,

I use plunge roughing regardless of spindle size, because it does reduce stress on the
TOOL as well as on the spindle. Because I machine only superalloys, the tools normally
used for plunging do not work for me. For cutting toolsteels they work well, though,
and we rough about 8-10 times faster than rough milling. If you cut nasty materials,
look into ceramic tools. I do not know of a macro that calculates the pattern for me.
Good luck
Pete

Bob,
I've talked to alot of tooling vendors about plunge roughing. It looks like
that's the way to go, especially if you have a 40 taper machine. All
stresses go up the spindle axially rather than radially. This creates a
better cut and allows higher feedrates. I haven't found a macro for this
type of application for SC FreeFrom 11.5. Does anyone have one?
Thanks,
Mike Deren

Does anybody use plunge roughing? Is it any better than a spiral out
type roughing move?
Alsodoes anybode remember a plunge roughing macro that dale poisel made
a number of years ago? It wouold rough out a closed profile with drill
motions. If plunge roughing is better in your opinions I would like to
try the macro.

Thanks
bob
