Bob, I use plunge roughing regardless of spindle size, because it does reduce stress on the TOOL as well as on the spindle. Because I machine only superalloys, the tools normally used for plunging do not work for me. For cutting toolsteels they work well, though, and we rough about 8-10 times faster than rough milling. If you cut nasty materials, look into ceramic tools. I do not know of a macro that calculates the pattern for me. Good luck Pete

It looks like that's the way to go, especially if you have a 40 taper machine. All stresses go up the spindle axially rather than radially. This creates a better cut and allows higher feedrates. I haven't found a macro for this type of application for SC FreeFrom 11.5. Does anyone have one? Is it any better than a spiral out type roughing move? Alsodoes anybode remember a plunge roughing macro that dale poisel made a number of years ago? It wouold rough out a closed profile with drill motions. If plunge roughing is better in your opinions I would like to try the macro.
