He was speaking after inaugurating Kancips-2010, the 20th annual conference of Indian Psychiatric Society's Karnataka state branch, under the theme `Mind and Body Interaction' here recently. He said there is a need to create awareness among the people in both rural and urban areas about the remedial measures that are available for mentally challenged people. "There is a tendency to condemn those suffering from mental ailments as `mad person'. This stigma aggravates the problem. The society should be sympathetic towards the people suffering from such ailments," he added. Justice Bannurmath<http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/search?q=Justice%20Bannurmath> observed that nearly 8% deaths in the country were due to problems related to mental health. He pointed out that Karnataka is the first state to comply with the direction of the Supreme Court<http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/search?q=Supreme%20Court> and appoint a judge to handle cases related to mental health problems. Citing some examples, Justice Bannurmath said eminent personalities like Isaac Newton <http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/Isaac-Newton>, Abraham Lincoln <http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/Abraham-Lincoln>, Winston Churchill <http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/Winston-Churchill> and Michael Jackson <http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/Michael-Jackson> were affected with one or the other form of mental diseases. Presiding over the session, Dr Anand Handigol<http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/search?q=Anand%20Handigol> said: "The Society has been organizing World Mental Health Week<http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/search?q=World%20Mental%20Health%20Week> , World Suicide Prevention Day<http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/search?q=World%20Suicide%20Prevention%20Day>, Anti-Tobacco Day and the like. It has plans to organize such programmes in rural areas in future to create awareness among the villagers." Dr Shivanand Pol <http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/search?q=Pol> said the Society has been conferring state-level and national-level awards on eminent psychiatrists recognizing their services.
