Shimla: Dr. Rajiv Bindal, Health and Family Welfare Minister has urged the Central Government for according its permission to start post-graduate level course in Mental Health at IGMC, Shimla. Dr. Bindal was speaking in a 11th Central Council Conference of Health and Family Welfare Department at New Delhi today. He said that all codal formalities for starting the course had been completed at IGMC, Shimla and urged the Medical Council to give its approval soon for the course. He said that for medical education the need of land had been reduced to 20 acres from 25 acres in hilly States and also urged for 10 acres as per norms of Matro City so that shortage of doctors could be met out in the State as well as in the country. He said that the maximum distance between hospitals and medical colleges should also be increased from 10 kms to 15 kms and 20 kms. Health Minister said that to meet out the shortage of specialists, the teacher-pupil ratio had been increased from 1:1 to 1:2 which needed to further be increased to 1:3. He said that State Government had made unprecedented progress in last two years in the field of medical education and added that 370 girls were getting training in B.Sc nursing and 880 in GNM nursing during current financial year. These seats would be enhanced to 2000 upto 2012, he added. He said that the State had also made progress under National Rural Health Mission and added that 75 hospitals had been brought under Mother-Child Scheme in 1st phase in which delivery facilities were being provided round the clock. He said that these facilities would also be made available in 120 hospitals of the State. He said that Himachal Pradesh was also adjudged the best State in implementation of National Health Insurance Scheme. Dr. Bindal said that the State had also set up many milestones in Ayush System of Medicine and added that Government was also committed to strengthen Paprola Rajiv Gandhi Government Ayurvedic College and to develop it at par with National Ayurveda Institute for which he urged the Central Government to provide funds.
