At that time, he used to earn not more than a few hundred rupees. But everything changed once ‘Dhuniya’ was declared a hit at the box office.
Producers, who used to avoid him, were eager to sign him for their films. And why not? His films such as ‘Takath’ and ‘Junglee’ did manage to bring cheer to his producers and distributors. As part of his social responsibility, he thought of building an old age home near Bangalore for which he even bought the land but the project was shelved. He recently spent two days at NIMHANS to study mentally-challenged people for his role in ‘Kari Chiruthe’, the film that is going to be released shortly. “It was a good learning experience. I am ready to donate money but there is no guarantee that the money will reach those who need it," says Vijay, who will be playing the lead in ‘Johny Mera Naam, Preethi Mera Kaam’. Preetham Gubbi, who directed Ganesh’s film ‘Maleyali Jotheyali’, has been assigned to handle the megaphone for ‘Johny Mera Naam Preethi Mera Kaam’. “Though it is a love story, there are some action scenes to keep the audience happy,” reveals the actor whose other films include ‘Veerabahu’ and ‘Kanteerava’. *Would he like to do an art film?* “Personally, I have no problems in doing an art film. I guess it’s for my producers to answer this one,’’ he says.
