*Chandigarh :* Deposing before the court during resumed hearing of the
infamous Nari Niketan rape case, a doctor with the Government Medical
College and Hospital in Sector 32 said that the 19-year-old rape victim had
conceived on March 15 last year. The statements assume significance as the
victim was shifted from Nari Niketan, home for the destitute to Ashreya,
home for the mentally challenged on March 13, 2009.

She was found to be pregnant in May when the police booked nine persons,
employees of Nari Niketan and Ashreya,on charges of gangrape. The police
have booked Bhupinder Singh, Jamuna Parsad, Kamla, Vijender and Maya,
employees of Nari Niketan and Naresh, Bhagwandeep, Davinder and Chotu,
employees of Ashreya for the crime. The DNA of Chotu had matched that of the
child delivered by the victim in December last year.

Dr Radhika Rathore of GMCH-32 reportedly told the court of additional
district and session judge GC Garg that on May 18, 2009, when the
authorities of Nari Niketan brought her to hospital for medical examination,
at that time victim was pregnant and she had conceived on March 15. She also
said that the age of the victim at that time was somewhere between 19 and 20
years.

“With the doctor’s statements, it is clear that the victim conceived during
her stay in Ashreya and not Nari Niketan. The DNA of the child had also
matched with that of Ashreya employee,” said defence counsel Harish
Bhardawaj.
