*Pune* : A short film on schizophrenia by city-based Chaitanya Mental Health
Care Centre has won the first prize at the Schizophrenia Research Foundation
(SCARF) International Film festival on mental illness held in Chennai.
Five-minute film Pages of Life analyses the role a family can play as
caretakers of such patients. The festival aims at busting myths about mental
illness that abound our society and to empower friends and family in dealing
with them better.

Tushar Bachal, director of the film said, “We want to convey the message
that schizophrenics are normal people. Family members take good care of them
and their work is commendable. This is specially important in India as we do
not have the concept of halfway homes but only of mental asylums.” The film
festival featured 44 entries on mental illness, with the specified theme
being the role of family in mental health/disorder.

“We have seen remarkable changes in approach towards mental illness in
India. The SCARF film festival wants to create awareness through the power
of film and electronic media. There have been many misconceptions that have
spread through not only Hindi films, but movies in all languages,” said
producer Rony George.

The Chaitanya Mental Health Care Centre was started in 1999 and has been
involved in positively shaping the psychological response to mental illness
among the patients and their caretakers.
