In line with the World Health Organisation's call to observe Mental Health
Week from October 4, the Andhra Pradesh Counselling Psychologists
Association has planned week-long activities across the State to promote
mental health.

“A perceptible spurt in crimes such as rapes, suicides, murders, eve-teasing
and ragging can be attributed to the dwindling mental health of people at
large. If teenagers today are unable to strike a balance between mental and
emotional needs and falling easy prey to transitory emotions, their parents
must shoulder the responsibility. Children must be taught at a young age the
techniques of striking a balance between the two needs,” State president of
the Association T.S. Rao told a press conference on Sunday. Dr. Rao said the
need to promote awareness of mental health was imperative. Besides focus on
physical fitness, people must also think of ways to be mentally fit. “In
addition to improving their IQ, the younger lot must also focus on their EQ
(emotional quotient),” he maintained.

Expressing serious concern over social taboo, he said most of the patients
suffering from depression and anxiety were on a denial mode.

Besides Vijayawada, the week-long awareness programmes will be held in
Hyderabad, Karimnagar, Warangal, Visakhapatnam, Srikakulam, Vizianagaram,
Guntur, Tirupati, Nellore and Kadapa. In the city, the Association will host
a talk by Dr. Rao and psychiatrist P. Krishnamurthy at Siddhartha Mahila
Kalasala on “Mental growth through psychological counselling” at 3 p.m. on
Monday. On Tuesday, an awareness meet would be held at 4 p.m. at Vijaya
Nursing School in Rokallapalem.

A talk on “Students – Positive Mental Attitude” would be hosted on the
campus of SRR & CVR Government College, Machavaram, at 10 a.m. on Wednesday.
