*October 17th, 2010* Dyslexic children appearing for their class 10 exams next year, have been promised a host of benefits by the Karnataka Secondary Education and Examination Board (KSEEB), like an extra hour during each examination and helpers to read question papers. But the children are finding it difficult to get their condition medically authenticated so that they can avail of these benefits.
Medical institutions authorised to provide the certificates are saying that they are short of paediatric psychiatrists who will have to examine the children before authenticating their condition. Dyslexic students attempting their class 10 public exams in March-April 2011 will have to submit the medical certificates to their schools by October 15, after getting it authenticated by National Institute for Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (Nimhans). “On August 16, we got an appointment with the OPD of the psychiatric department in Nimhans. When we went to the hospital on that day we were sent back after being told that our appointment was postponed to August 31. However, even that appointment was postponed to January 24, 2011,” said an anxious parent, whose dyslexic child will be attempting the class 10 public exams. “But we have to submit the certificates to the school by October 15. If we don’t, our son will not get the benefits which he very much requires,” said the worried parent. Adding to the problem is that schools are shut for mid-term vacations and the certificates should be sent on October 15 to the KSEEB which will then issue the admission tickets to the students. According to school authorities, almost all parents of dyslexic children are facing this problem. D Shashi Kumar, director, Brain Centre, said, “We have to send the certificates along with the Optical Mark Recognition (OMR) sheets, otherwise students will not be able to avail the special benefits. We are asking the Nimhans authorities for help, but the problem is, even children from class 1 to 9 (who can wait) are also seeking the certificates.
