*November 3, 2010* * * *MANGALORE:* A three-day international conference on women and mental health organized by School of Social Work, Roshni Nilaya, Mangalore, and Flinders University, Australia, adopted a six-point resolution.
Participants of the conference deliberated on various issues, facets on above theme and adopted resolutions for consideration by stakeholders. A copy of the resolution was given to M Veerappa Moily, Union law minister. Acknowledging the rights and mental health issues, the remedial measures in the form of various acts and policies, the conference recommends that measures provided under the act be taken to the grassroot level through awareness created for the public, law enforcing authorities and judiciary. The conference urged for creation of more shelter homes, medical facilities, welfare measures and counselling centres under schools of social works in India. It advocated the need to bring in evidence-based research and practice in the field of women and mental health from India through research institutions, schools of social work and practitioners. Moily assured to do the needful with respect to the above demands. It also sought to review the current curriculum in schools of social work and to include the programme, policies and newer models of development on women and mental health. The conference wanted authorities concerned to bridge the mental health service gap in terms of community-based mental health and development approach with special reference to women's mental health. Practitioners, educators, researchers, NGO, schools of social work, research institutions to network and commit in provisions of accessible, affordable and available services to the women to enhance their mental health.
