*November 3, 2010* Almost four years ago, a 40-year-old mentally ill woman had gone missing from her house in a Maharashtra village and somehow reached this part of the country last year. After being given medical treatment and care, the destitute recollected her name, Vandana alias Sindhu, and also revealed her home address, following which she was reunited with her family which had almost lost all hope of getting her back.
Vandana was the 56th destitute who got back her home through “Mission Milap” of the Universal Disabled Caretaker Social Welfare Society, an NGO working for the welfare of the disabled, orphan and destitute, at Padiala village in Mohali. Society administrator Rajinder Kaur said Vandana was brought to their shelter by village panchayat of Chintgarh in Mohali on November 3, 2009, in a very miserable condition. The Panchayat had told the NGO that the woman had been found roaming in their village aimlessly and seemed to be mentally ill. Since she also seemed to be an outsider without any link to this area, the woman was admitted to the Society’s home for care and medical treatment. “Following proper medical treatment and care, the woman, who initially could not even tell her name, recollected her name and whereabouts. Then, with the help of the local police, we reached out to her native place and located her family,” disclosed Kaur. On getting a call from the Society, Vandana’s husband was delighted and came calling from Taluka Lakhandoor village, Bhandara district, of Maharashtra to take away his better half along. “He disclosed that since Vandana was mentally ill, she had left the house on January 25, 2007, and went missing. All their efforts to trace her had remained futile.
