*November 9, 2010* *PUNE:* A 28-year-old mentally challenged woman, who was living in the SOS Balgram orphanage in Yerawada, allegedly committed suicide by jumping into the Mutha river from Tilak bridge near the PMC office on Friday night. The fire brigade took out her body from the river on Saturday morning. The Shivajinagar police said that Salma Qureshi was mentally unstable and was undergoing treatment at the Yerawada mental hospital for several years.
Senior police inspector Sampat Patil of the Shivajinagar police station said that on Friday evening Qureshi and three women, also from Balgram, had gone to Laxmi road for shopping. According to Patil, Qureshi was never allowed to go out alone by the Balgram authorities. At about 8.45 pm near Tilak bridge, Qureshi suddenly left her partner's hand and jumped into the river. The fire brigade reached the spot on receiving a call from the Balgram officials who were informed about the incident by the three women who accompanied Qureshi. The firemen searched for Qureshi till late Friday night, but in vain. Her body was fished out on Saturday at 9 am after the fire men resumed their search operation. Patil said that Qureshi does not have any relatives and her body was handed over to the Balgram authorities after performing a post-mortem at the Sassoon general hospital. http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/articleshow/6881226.cms -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Mental Health Advocacy (News 'N Views) India" group.
