Complimenting the good work done by the IMA, she solicited their help in
implementing mental health services to the needy patients.

"We plan to call a meeting to decide on the different programmes for the
mentally-challenged. The government is all set to give identity cards to the
physically and mentally challenged which will be distributed soon."

Sreemathi said that the Kozhikode-based IMHANS had been allotted Rs 30 crore
for upgrading it as a 'Centre for Excellence'. Around Rs 9 crore had already
been received from the Centre for that purpose, she said.

Calling on the IMA to join the government to fight against communicable and
noncommunicable diseases, the minister said that doctors should work to find
solutions to prevent their occurrence. Following the 'IMA Goes EcoFriendly'
programme on the disposal of biomedical waste, she said that the new unit
proposed at Palode could be made a public-private partnership.

In his special address, Justice V R Krishna Iyer spoke on the need to
nationalise the health services in the country on the lines of Great
Britain.

Speaking after being installed as the new state president of the IMA, Dr G
Vijayakumar said that a committee would be set up to study the problems
owing to the abolition of private practice in the government sector.
