*Nov. 11:* In a case of alleged police torture registered with State Human Rights Commission on Thursday, a 35 year old woman has become mentally ill as a result of physical torture and electric shock treatment administered by Kothanur police, who broke all the rules.
While a woman cannot be detained in the police station after 6pm, she was allegedly detained till 9.30pm. As per the JJAct, a child cannot be brought to police station and kept even for half an hour. Yet her 13 year old son Ajit was allegedly detained in the same police station for over six and half hours, from 3pm to 9.30pm on November 8 and was also beaten up. Four days later, the 35 year old Kasthuri, a resident of Pulkeshinagar, is afraid of her own shadow and will let neither her bed-ridden husband Vijaykumar nor her son come near her. Say the word “Police” and Kasthuri trembles. “Don't beat me, don't beat me, I don't know anything,” she repeats over and over. On the day, she and her son were picked up at around 3pm by four police personnel attached to Kothanur Crime Police in a white Omni car bearing vehicle no KA-01- N- 1680. Says Ajit: “Once we reached the police station, one of the constables brought a man named Veera who said he had my mother a gold chain and wanted it back. Then we were taken to a room on the first floor and one of the women police constables beat my mother with a lathi. I pleaded with her not to hurt my mom and she beat me up,” said Ajit. “As that woman constable continued to beat my mother, another policeman joined her and beat my mom with another lathi on her arms, legs, kicked her in her stomach demanding the gold chain. When my mom denied receiving any gold chain, she was given electric shocks.” “When they realized we are innocent, they dropped us to Vijaylakshmi Hotel near our home at around 9.30pm. They threatened us that if we reveal the incident to anyone, they would kill me and my father. Since then my mother is like this, “ Ajit says, inconsolable. Moved by the plight of Kasthuri, her relatives and neighbors have approached SICHREM, a Human Rights NGO has filed a complaint with SHRC . Veera was allegedly arrested under section 109 IPC and is in Parappana Agrahara prison on another charge. The police?
