*Bangalore, Nov 30*: The ancient medical system of Ayurveda can be adopted successfully in treating and curing mental illness, National Institute of Mental and Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS) Assistant Director Chandrashekhar said today.
Speaking to reporters here he said his department had gained immensely by Ayurveda practices during the last 30 years in treatment and curative aspects of severe mental disorders. He would share this with the global Ayurveda community during the fourth World Ayurveda Congress to be held here from December 9, he said. He said the mental diseases can be treated in two different levels, neurotic and at psychiatric levels. Ayurveda system was capable of curing any neurotic problem he said, adding the psychiatric problems have to be treated with modern medicines. Mental health problems were on the rise in the recent years due to excessive stress and change in life style. Ayurveda was the best available medicine with no side effects for maintaining good mental health, he said. NIMHANS would share its data on mental health as part of its efforts to popularise Ayurveda at the pre-Congress workshop on December 8, he said.
