*Byculla *Byculla’s Masina hospital has been thrown into the limelight what with allegations and reports of its psychiatric patients being detained and provided banned drugs. Following an internal inquiry by hospital authorities, the psychiatric ward stands in danger of being shut down. The Directorate of Health Services (DHS) recently filed a report that showed that the hospital was ostensibly violating the Mental Health Act of 1987.Primarily catering to the poor and the needy, the allegations of giving banned psychotropic drugs to the patients still need to be substantiated and the hospital authorities and trustees are trying to find leads for this illegal activity. Dr. Yusuf Matcgeswala, Head of Psychiatry at the hospital, is still in the process of finding proof that suggests this. “We do not do anything without the consent of the patient or his family so I do not know what banned medicines people are talking about,“ he said.
