*BANGALORE*: At least 50 to 70 million people in the country are suffering
from some kind of a mental problem, the rate of occurrence being 20 among
every 1,000. In view of this, Infosys chief mentor N R Narayanamurthy
proposed a three-fold plan to achieve the goal of "greater success" to the
country's only brain bank - Nimhans.

"You should go from success to greater success," he said at the institute
day celebrations of Nimhans.

"We cannot even comprehend the mysteries that evolve during our quest to
understand the human brain. The aim of this quest should be to relieve
people from suffering and to improve quality of life in the most economical,
ethical and compassionate manner," Murthy said.

"We should be able to measure factors such as how many people are you able
to reach, collaborate and do joint projects with. Once the standards are
set, we should work towards the goal and compare us with the best in the
world," he explained.

The IT guru recommended use of information and communication technology (
ICT) in the field of medicine, especially in providing better medical
services to remote areas. "By using methods like tele-conference, we should
be able to deliver the best of treatment facilities to remote places," he
said.

He pointed out that institutions like Nimhans should bring awareness to
eradicate stigma-related mental illnesses and rehabilitate those have
recovered. "We should be able to communicate with families suffering from
mental illness and most importantly, to the society that mental illness,
like any other disease, can be treated," he said.
