*9 March 2011* * * *New Delhi* : The Delhi High Court today directed the Delhi government to provide better facilities to the mentally-ill prisoners lodged in Tihar Jail.
A bench comprising Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justice Sanjiv Khanna told the Government to expedite the implementation of the guidelines framed by the Institute of Human Behaviour and Allied Sciences as many prisoners of Tihar Jail have significant amount of mental health morbidity, which is mostly ignored and neglected by judicial officers. The bench gave its directions while disposing of a petition filed by a prisoner Sonali Sachdeva, alleging that mentally-ill prisoners were languishing in jails and at various other mental hospitals, violating their human rights. The petitioner said such jailbirds can neither contest their case nor they have any knowledge why they are behind bars.
