*PANAJI* : Last year, 310 people chose death over life in the state.

In fact, 2010 has had the dubious distinction of having witnessed the
highest number of suicides in the last five years. While there were 278
suicide cases registered in 2009, 287 in 2008, and 268 in 2007, 273 cases
were recorded in 2006. Police sources add that 36 cases of suicide have
already registered in the first two months of the current year.

Data obtained indicates that 51 victims chose to end their lives on account
of family problems in 2010 - almost double the rate in 2008. Another major
reason behind suicides was illness. Forty-nine people suffering from mental
illness, and 30 suffering from prolonged infirmities ended their lives last
year.

Explaining the reason behind this alarming trend, psychiatrist P R Pai
Kakode says, "Young people in particular take the extreme step of ending
their lives as they are unable to cope with everyday stress. We are becoming
increasingly myopic and can't see beyond ourselves. Our patience levels are
also on a decline as is our fear of everything going wrong with our lives."

Incidentally, while the number of persons committing suicide due to
unrequited love went up from 10 to 17 last year, no suicides were committed
on account of broken down marriages or illegitimate pregnancies.

While seven persons chose to end their lives due to bankruptcy or a sudden
change in their economic statuses, four took the drastic step on account of
poverty. It may be noted that this was the first time in the last three
years that suicides occurred due to poverty. Unemployment was also the
reason behind 10 cases of suicides, and 2 on account of professional
hurdles. Nine individuals ended their lives upon failing in examinations

Although the number of women who committed suicide within seven years of
marriage was quite high in 2010 - 16 -, the rate was lower than that
recorded in the preceding two years. However, the fact that four cases of
suicides in this category have already been registered in first two months
of the current year, is a cause for concern.
