*27 May 2011* *Tumkur*: As much as 1.5 per cent of the population in Karnataka suffers from mental illness but only 12 districts in the State have psychiatrists and rest in the State do not, according to State Commissioner for persons with disability K.V. Rajanna. He pointed out that because there is an acute shortage of psychiatrists in the State, doctors at the primary health centres have been trained to treat patients with mental illness.
Speaking to presspersons here on Thursday, Mr. Rajanna said that a circular has been sent to all government hospitals to register mentally ill patients and provide them proper treatment. Mr. Rajanna said 1,25,250 disabled children have been enrolled under the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyana.
