TIRUNELVELI: The Indian Red Cross Society's Tirunelveli Chapter rescued
uncared mentally deranged persons wandering along the highways and the
streets on Friday and sent 23 of them to a Tuticorin-based home.
As the mentally ill persons are seen wandering everywhere, Indian Red Cross
Society's Tirunelveli Chapter sent them for rehabilitation. When the
exercise commenced at Palayamkottai on Friday morning, the volunteers never
thought that their operation would extend up to Pettai on the city outskirts
after rescuing the mentally ill at Tirunelveli Junction and Tirunelveli
Town.
After the five-hour operation, they nabbed 23 persons and took them to the
Bishop Sargent School for the Mentally Retarded, where they were washed and
provided with new clothes. A hair-dresser cut their hair and a doctor
screened them to ascertain their healthiness.
“Though some of them were rude on being caught, the doctor administered some
tablets to them and they are calm now. After the medical screening, they
will be taken to a rehabilitation home at Caldwell Colony in Tuticorin,”
said D.A. Prabakar, honorary secretary of Indian Red Cross Society's
Tirunelveli Chapter.
Palayamkottai-based NGO ‘Nesapaarvai' and members of Bishop Sargent School
for the Mentally Retarded supported the IRCS personnel in the cause.
