6th August, 2011 marks the 10th Anniversary of the Tragedy of Erwadi.
On this very day, at an Erwadi Dargah in Ram Nathapuram District of Tamilnadu at the stroke of early morning 28 hapless mentally ill Indians were roasted alive in chained condition.
Ten year is a long time.Have we learnt any lessons from this? Have conditions in Mental Assylums / hospitals changed for the better?Are forced interventions passé? Stigma, Discrimiation are they things of the past?
The answer to the above questions is and unfortunate NO!..It is time to look back at Erwadi and pledge that such a thing will never happen.What happened was is a blot to humanity. It is time to question ourselves why we haven't learnt from Erwadi? What is going wrong? What needs to be done.It is not enough to reminiscence the horrific event and re-live it.It is time to think beyond Erwadi!!
Centre for Disability Studies [CDS], Nalsar announces a two week event from 6^th August to 15^th August "Beyond Erwadi Towards Independence".
CDS seeks essays, poems, posters, sharing personal experiences from persons living with mental illness, caregivers, professionals, human rights activits and the civil society looking crtitcally on issues Mental Illness.
