14 Aug 2011 CHENNAI: A 55-year-old mentally-ill man, who was arrested by the Madurai police in 1979 for murdering his mother and father, consumed acid and died. He mistook it for a soft drink.
The victim, identified as Azhagarmalai, was immediately taken to the Kilpauk Medical College Hospital (KMCH), but it was too late. Azhagarmalai died without responding to any treatment. Azhagarmalai was an inmate of the Institute of Mental Health in Kilpauk. Some of the inmates and staff found him frothing near the bathroom on Friday morning. By the time he was rushed to KMCH, Azhagarmalai had lost conciousness. Secretariat Colony police have registered a case of unnatural death under Section 174 of Criminal Procedure Code. The acid was kept in the bathroom for cleaning toilets of the mental health facility. Azhagarmalai consumed it thinking it was a soft drink, police sources said. No one from the facility noticed that the victim had fallen down and he was lying unattended for nearly half an hour. "If the victim was rescued earlier and brought to the hospital, the doctors could have saved his life," a police officer dealing with the case said. In 1979, Azhagarmalai was arrested by the Madurai south police on charges of murder. According to police sources, Alagarmalai (54) was arrested by the Madurai police in 1979 on the charge of murdering his parents. After investigators found him to be mentally unstable, he was shifted to the IMH at Kilpauk. A couple of years later, Alagarmalai was acquitted in the case. However, he continued to remain in the hospital for treatment. Early on Saturday, he was lying unconscious near the toilet. An empty disinfectant bottle was found near him. He was shifted to the Kilpauk Medical College and Hospital where he died, the sources said.
