*21 Aug 2011* *MYSORE*: High court judge N Kumar on Saturday sought suggestions from the medical fraternity for effective implementation of the Mental Health Act 1987. Inaugurating the 21st annual conference of the Indian Psychiatric Society at here, the judge said following a public interest litigation, the apex court has entrusted high courts to look after the implementation of the act. And a judge has been exclusively appointed for the purpose in every state. Kumar who is the implementing judge here in Karnataka said law and mental health go hand in hand and without proper knowledge of law it is difficult to eradicate illness from society. Even doctors should be aware of legal requirements on this score.
Medical opinion assumes greater importance while dealing with cases related to psychiatry. If medical advice is accurate the diagnosis will be flawless and if it is erroneous the verdict will be inaccurate, the judge felt adding that we believe that reports or certificates issued by the medical fraternity are the gospel truth. The judge has appealed to psychiatrists to offer suggestions on how to effectively implement the act for the welfare of the patients. A conference of judges, lawyers and medical experts has been convened in Dharwad on September 11.
