*13 September 2011* *Kozhikode* : The Mental Health Action Trust (MHAT), a community-based volunteer organisation in Kerala, today announced plans to expand its services in the State.
Talking to newspersons here MHAT Clinical Director and Managing Trustee Dr Manoj Kumar T said it will establish six more centres which whill start functioning from September 19 in Kozhikode district. These centres would be at Vatakara, Perambra, Koilandi, Kakkattil, Payyoli and Edasseri, besides seven other existing centres, he said. He said the MHAT rendered free medical treatment jointly with palliative care volunteers after identifying mentally ill patients wandering on the streets. The outfit was able to cure and brought to mainstrem more than 1000 economically backward patients with free medications during the past three years, he claimed. He said the trust was providing free servies funded through donations in 28 centres in Kozhikode, Malappuram and Wayanad districts. Quoting official data, he said these three districts alone accounted for 80,000 mentally ill patients out of the total 3.5 lakh in the State which has very few expert doctors comparatively, to provide affective treatment to them.
