*Karthika Gopalakrishnan* * 13 November 2011* *CHENNAI *: A father, who ended up killing his three-year-old mentally ill daughter by giving her sleeping pills, has now been granted bail. Terming it "a very pathetic case," principal sessions judge P Devadass granted the interim relief to the man on Saturday.
A welder by profession, 38-year-old A Kanniappan was married to Deivanayagi (29) and lived in Mylapore with their son Santhosh Kumar (10). After their daughter Janani was born, they found she was unable to speak, walk or hear. Helpless about her condition, Kanniappan , in consultation with his wife, booked a room at Trisea Residency at Walaja Road in Triplicane on October 12, 2011. According to police, he gave sleeping pills to his son and daughter. Both Kanniappan and Deivanayagi consumed poison . In his "suicide" note, Kanniappan mentioned he was apprehensive about his daughter's future. He wanted to sacrifice his family and himself along with his daughter. However, Santhosh woke up at 5.30am and telephoned his uncle , Mohan, also a welder, that he felt like he was being choked. His parents and sister were not responding to repeated calls. Mohan rushed to the spot and took the family to the hospital. Janani died on the way while the others were admitted to intensive care. Kanniappan surrendered before police on November 6. Passing orders, the judge observed that the case was a "clash between law and morals." While a court of law had to administer justice, Devadass noted, "The court was not a motionless machine and had a mind. It can feel the pulse of human beings." Pointing out that Kanniappan had himself furnished all the details about the case to the investigating officer, the judge said he would not tamper with the evidence either.
